Student's Pass

Prepare your Singapore study stay

Foreign students accepted for qualifying full-time study generally need a Student's Pass unless they hold an applicable immigration exemption. The exact process depends on the type of institution and course.

Admission first

Obtain the required admission or registration acknowledgement from the institution before starting the applicable Student's Pass process.

Online application

ICA states that Student's Pass applications for Institutes of Higher Learning should generally be submitted at least two months and not more than three months before the course begins.

Documents

Typical information includes passport details, educational background, financial support information and institution documentation.

Processing fee

ICA currently lists a non-refundable S$45 Student's Pass processing fee for the applicable application routes.

IPA & entry

If approved, ICA may issue an In-Principle Approval letter. Visa arrangements may be included where applicable.

Issuance

After the required formalities in Singapore, the Student's Pass is issued digitally. Additional issuance fees may apply.

Student's Pass requirements differ between Institutes of Higher Learning and EduTrust-certified private education institutions. Check the applicable route for your selected institution.
Part-Time Work

Understand Singapore's student work rules

A Student's Pass does not automatically give every international student permission to work. Eligible students may work without a separate work pass only when the institution and work arrangement meet the Ministry of Manpower's requirements.

During school term

For eligible institutions and students, work without a work pass can be permitted for a maximum of 16 hours per week or for qualifying industrial attachment/internship arrangements.

During vacation

Eligible full-time students holding a Student's Pass may work during vacation periods subject to the applicable institution and eligibility conditions.

Not every institution qualifies

The work-pass exemption applies only to institutions and circumstances listed by the Ministry of Manpower.

Always verify work eligibility for your specific institution and course before accepting employment. Students who do not meet the exemption conditions need the appropriate work pass.
After Your Studies

Plan your post-study pathway

Graduation does not by itself provide an unrestricted right to work in Singapore. After completing studies, graduates who wish to work need an appropriate work pass or other valid immigration status and must meet the relevant requirements.

Employment search

Use your academic qualification, skills and professional network to explore suitable employment opportunities.

Employer-sponsored work pass

Once you secure employment, the employer may need to apply for the appropriate work pass depending on the role and eligibility.

Long-term planning

Immigration outcomes depend on the pass type, employer, salary, qualifications and rules applicable at the time of application.

Post-study immigration rules can change. Plan your employment and immigration pathway based on the rules applicable when you graduate.
Scholarships & Funding

Plan your funding early

Institution scholarships

Some institutions provide scholarships, tuition reductions or other financial support. Criteria and availability vary.

Academic performance

Scholarship decisions may consider academic results, programme, intake and institution-specific requirements.

Budget planning

Prepare for tuition, accommodation, food, transport, insurance, travel and other expenses even when funding support is available.
