What Is a Schengen Visa and How Can It Help Indian Students?

The Schengen Area allows travel between participating European countries under common short-stay visa rules. For Indian students, it is important to understand that a Schengen visa is not the same as a student residence permit for a long Master's or Bachelor's programme.

What Is a Schengen Visa?

A Schengen visa is generally a short-stay visa for a temporary visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It can allow travel within the Schengen Area subject to the conditions printed on the visa and the rules applicable to the traveller.

Is There a "Schengen Student Visa" for a Full Degree?

For studies lasting more than 90 days, students normally need to follow the national long-stay visa and residence rules of the country where they will study. The European Commission confirms that stays exceeding 90 days are subject to national procedures.

For example, a student going to France for a long Master's programme follows France's long-stay student visa process; a student going to Germany follows Germany's national student visa and residence process. A short-stay Schengen visa should not be treated as permission to live and study long-term in another country.

How Can It Help Students?

If you hold an appropriate long-stay visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen country, you may generally travel to other Schengen countries for short visits subject to the applicable 90/180-day rules. This can be useful for tourism or short personal travel while studying.

Important Planning Point

Always identify the country where you will actually study and follow that country's official visa procedure. Do not rely on the idea that obtaining a Schengen visa automatically gives a student the right to live, study or work throughout Europe.
