What Courses Are Popular With International Students in Singapore?

Singapore offers programmes across business, computing, engineering, hospitality, science, design and other areas. An MBA or management programme may be suitable for some students, but course choice should be based on academic background and career plans rather than popularity alone.

How Is the Student's Pass Processed?

International students generally need a Student's Pass unless they fall under an applicable exemption. For approved private education institutions, ICA states that a new Student's Pass application should generally be submitted at least two months and not more than three months before the course begins. Processing is generally within one month for a new application at a PEI, with faster processing for EduTrust-accredited institutions, although some cases can take longer.

Can International Students Work Part-Time?

The old article said international students could not work while studying. That is no longer an accurate general statement. Singapore allows eligible Student's Pass holders at approved institutions to work without a separate work pass under specified conditions. For eligible institutions, work during term may be allowed for up to 16 hours per week or as part of an approved internship/industrial attachment. Vacation work may also be permitted for eligible students under the applicable rules.

Students should check the current Ministry of Manpower list and conditions before accepting employment. After the Student's Pass expires, a graduate needs the appropriate work pass to work in Singapore.

What About Private Colleges?

When considering a private education institution, students should check its current registration and EduTrust status where applicable, the exact qualification being awarded, the awarding institution, progression options and the conditions attached to the programme.
